Local Priorities

Shoplifting:

Shoplifting isn’t a victimless crime – it impacts local businesses, raises prices for honest customers and can contribute to wider issues of antisocial behaviour. Being visible helps us deter crime and support shop owners directly.

Issued: 19 May 2026

Status Update

To tackle this we have been doing the following:

-Carry out high visibility patrols within the Town Centre but also the smaller shops around the housing estates.
-We have monthly Shop Watch meetings with the shop managers/staff who are involved in the scheme
- We also work with various partners to assist in the tackle against shoplifters such as our Colleagues in the Castle Dene Centre and Durham County Council in relation to improving CCTV, banning suspects from shops and the Town Centre and assisting in patrols and intelligence gathering.

Actioned: 19 May 2026

Youth Nuisance / ASB: Over recent weeks in the Town Centre we have had multiple calls around ASB mainly around the shops with youths causing problems. This has centered around disused buildings in the town centre.

Issued: 19 May 2026

Status Update

Action taken by police to tackle anti-social behavior (ASB) includes:

- Working closely with partner agencies, housing providers and Durham County Council ASB team
- Using anti-social legislation and powers where appropriate to disrupt persistent offending and protect local residents
-Increased patrols and targeted engagement in hotspot areas to provide reassurance and deter further ASB

In recent weeks, numerous youths have been referred to the Anti-Social Behaviour Team, and a Community Protection Warning has been issued as part of ongoing efforts to address repeat anti-social behavior and prevent further incidents.

Actioned: 19 May 2026

Off Road Bikes / ASB: We continue to receive a number of calls regarding the use of off road bikes / E Bikes in the Peterlee area we have had multiple calls regarding Off Road bikes and Quad Bikes riding in an anti social and dangerous manner.

Issued: 19 May 2026

Status Update

Action taken by police to address ongoing nuisance bike issues include:
- Carrying out high visibility patrols along with colleagues from Durham County Council Neighbourhood Wardens Team
- Use Traffic 183’s, Traffic 184’s, Section 59 Powers, and No insurance powers to deal with riders and people identified as being involved.
- Work with housing providers of those identified as being responsible
- Intelligence gathering

In recent weeks, officers have seized a motorbike which was reported as stolen, we will continue to work proactively to identify and seize further vehicles being used illegally or anti-socially.

Actioned: 19 May 2026
